Examples of different type of stairs
The most straightforward, consisting of a single linear flight of steps with no change in direction. These are the most common because they are usually easy to design, construct and install. However, they use more linear space and might not be suitable for every floor plan.
Also called halfback, half-turn, or U-Shaped stair. These consist of two flights of stairs that go in opposite directions with a landing that connects the two parallel flights creating more visual interest than a straight stair.
Also called L-shaped stair, this type of stair features two perpendicular flights of steps that connect with a landing at a 90-degree angle. These fit nicely into a corner and provide a classic look.
Winder stairs are very similar to quarter-turn stairs, except there is no landing. Instead, the steps are continuous and wind the corner with larger wedge steps that take up less space than a full landing.
Curved staircases are designed to make a statement and are typically reserved for formal entries. A curved staircase will take on a delicate sweeping curve along the wall echoed by a curved banister.
Bifurcated or split staircases create one of the grandest looks and are commonly seen in historic estates and luxury hotels. Bifurcated stairs start with one broader flight at the bottom, leading to a generous landing where two smaller flights split into opposite directions.
Spiral staircases feature a central post with radiating steps that spiral upwards to the floor above, sometimes through a hole cut into the floor. Spiral staircases are substantial space savers, which makes them perfect for smaller homes.
Simply put, an open rise stair is one where the spaces between the treads are open rather than closed.
Closed rise stairs are staircases with a solid riser between each tread, which closes the gap between the steps. This makes it impossible to see through the stairs from below or above.
A Carolina curve stair is a curved staircase that follows a helical arc and is often used as an entrance feature in buildings. Curved stairs are known for their elegance and can be used in both traditional and contemporary architecture.
Cantilevered stairs are a staircase system in which one end of each individual step is connected to the wall by means of steel pins or bolts giving the appearance of a "floating" staircase.
Mono beam stairs are a type of staircase with a single central beam that supports the steps from underneath. The beam is usually supported by one side of the stairs, which creates a floating effect.
